The Scallions present Sounds of Vinyl and the Past [Mind's Ear Records]

The last two weeks has seen The Scallions latest on almost constant rotation at the MondoBongos household. Who are The Scallions? Two brothers: Shawn and Mike Franklin who tackle almost all the
instruments and perform what they describe as "avant garde power pop". Yes, like power pop the music is melodic but (at least on this lp) not hostage to strict pop forms and favours a more cinematic
approach. On first listen I mentally filed the album in the 'imaginary soundtracks' category, but later learned It is in fact a score ... Makes perfect sense as the music has a somewhat episodic character yet maintains a nice overall flow. I have to say it's one of the best albums I've heard this year.

Final words: I wanted to mention that the album is beautifully packaged. Full-colour gatefold cover and the LP is pressed on heavy green vinyl and tongue-in-cheek liner notes ["I am sure the kids will
really dig these super sounds"]. I haven't seen a presentation this nice since the 80's.
